A Sure Shot at Safeguarding
The student athletes of Singapore Sport School's (SSP) Shooting Academy took time out from their training schedules last month to learn about safeguarding in sport.
The workshop activities included:
-
a check-in game to gauge the student athletes' understanding of abuse and harassment
-
discussion on case scenarios and SPP policies on travel, rooming and digital communications
-
reflections on their roles and responsibilities as teammates and students
The hour was filled with lively conversations between the athletes on their personal experiences or incidents which they had witnessed and resources available to them should they encounter instances of abuse within their sporting environment.
The student athletes also identified how their coaches, parents and team mates could help them navigate the expectation placed on them as well as how they could manage pressures they faced.
The workshop was run as part of a series of engagements with the Singapore's shooters on the national pathway. Three other workshops were run with the national coaches, senior athletes and junior athletes from the Singapore Shooting Association.
